Types of Coffee
Although there are only 4 types of coffee, different growing conditions and climates contribute to creating different varieties with their own unique characteristics. There are many coffee varieties, but think also of the following – the coffee farmers and coffee drinkers know. This variety is only grown in Southeast Asia and is considered a kind of Liberica beans.
Where does the Coffee grow?
It is best to try a few coffees of different origins and to take note of the differences. The coffee plant is grown in an area commonly known as the coffee bean belt, and the soil and climate of the plantation where it is grown will have a major influence on the taste and properties of the coffee.
Inside the Cherry
The cherry skin is called the exocarp. Below it is the mesocarp, the pulp layer. It is then followed by the skimmed layer of parenchyma. The bean or the seed which is used as coffee is actually covered in a layer like paper which is called endocarp more commonly referred to as the parchment.
Inside that 2 coffee beans or seeds lie side by side in a thin membrane layer. Biologically this coffee seed skin is called spermoderm. Spermoderm is commonly referred to by the coffee lovers like you and me as the silver skin.
But there is more to it. Inside almost 5% of all the coffee in the world. There is only one bean or cherry in the seed and this is called a peaberry. It is sweeter and flavorful than most of the coffee.
